Meet Our Spring 2023 Interns

Each spring and fall, the EPLO office welcomes interns to work alongside staff learning about the European Parliament while having a blast in Washington, D.C.

Matthew, Pietro, Sara, and Michelle began their service as European Parliament Liaison Office trainees on March 1, 2023. The trainees selected for the spring 2023 term contribute skills and knowledge from very diverse backgrounds, working directly with EPLO staff across various portfolios. These include foreign affairs, communication and outreach, and internal policy. 

Matthew

Matthew is from southern California. He graduated from Hofstra University with a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Global Studies, with minors in European Studies and Geographic Information Systems. While a student at Hofstra, Matt lived abroad in Amsterdam for seven months. He also worked as a teaching assistant and conducted research on Congressional Environmental Policy and Gerrymandering in New York.

Pietro

Pietro hails from Carbonara di Bari, a neighborhood in Bari, Italy. Pietro received a law degree from Bocconi University, Italy. He then received his LLM degree in International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law from American University Washington College of Law. He is studying to take the US Bar Exam this summer in order to be admitted to the practice of law. 

Sara

Sara joins EPLO from the state of Indiana. She earned a bachelor’s degree in Journalism from Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis. In her journalism program, Sara took coursework in international communications and began to learn about the European Union. She is completing graduate school at the Institute for European Studies at Indiana University. As a graduate student, she has worked as a graduate assistant and teaching assistant to her department.

Michelle

Michelle grew up in Rhode Island. She received a bachelor’s degree at Wellesley College in Russian Area Studies with a minor in Peace & Justice and Translation. During this program, Michelle studied abroad in Brussels, Moscow, and Iceland. Michelle has worked at the Kyrgyz-Russian Slavic University (KRSU) in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. Michelle has recently completed her final semester as a graduate student fellow at the Center for Eurasian, Russian and Eastern European Studies (CERES) at Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service.
