Over the past five months, Hannah, Charles, and Brogan have immersed themselves in the work of the European Parliament Liaison Office here in Washington, DC. These three have helped staff craft bios and reports, attended events on the Hill, assisted with communication and outreach, and had the opportunity to meet several Members of the European Parliament.

Hannah says the traineeship made her a more well-rounded communicator who learned to approach international issues from different angles. “Learning to step outside a partisan bubble and approach international issues from a broad angle has widened my perspective on political communication and will be a tool I carry with me,” said Hannah. She enjoyed crafting social media projects and learning press elements.

While preparing for visits, Brogan found himself learning to consolidate critical information into concise paragraphs that would benefit the needs of EU lawmakers. During the internship, Brogan’s favorite part was attending the EU Caucus launch in the Rayburn office building (of the US House of Representatives), where he heard speeches from several notable American figures, including Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi, Congressman Brandon Boyle, and Congressman Joe Wilson.

Charles enjoyed the multi-layered process of decision-making in the Parliament and the EU. He says, “As Americans, I think we tend to view the EU as a single, centralized unit, and my traineeship with EPLO gave me great insight into not only how Parliament engages with Congress but also how Parliament interacts with other EU institutions, particularly the European Commission.” Charles relished seeing diplomacy in action by attending a variety of events and meetings.

Beyond working and attending events, our interns had the opportunity to experience the US capital and what it has to offer.
